THEORIES OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE (ARC 60704)

Project 1: Contextual Study Sketch Journal of a Traditional Street

This project focuses on examining the cultural dimensions of historical streets in Malaysia. I investigated both the architectural features and the social dynamics that define these streets. By creating a sketch journal with ten drawings and along with a detailed narrative and annotations, you'll capture the essence of these traditional areas and gain insights into the factors that contribute to their distinctive character and cultural significance.

This project offered me an in-depth exploration of the cultural and spatial dimensions of historical streets. It broadened my understanding and appreciation of the rich history and narratives embedded in these areas. I recognized the significant role that preserving such cultural heritage plays in shaping community identity and enriching the spaces they occupy. In hindsight I see that actively interacting with the local community could have deepened my insights and connection to the street. Me being an international student I felt somewhat detached and isolated in my approach rather than allowing myself to be fully immersed in the vibrant life of the area.

Project 2: Poster and Seminar-Contemporary issues in Asian Architecture

In this project, we delved into contemporary issues affecting Asian architecture, drawing insights from our street visit observations. We applied a problem-solving methodology, building an evaluation framework through weekly group discussions facilitated by our tutor. This approach allowed us to critically assess key features and identify challenges within the architectural landscape. Through analysis and collaborative brainstorming, we developed and proposed potential solutions to address these issues. The culmination of our work involved creating an A1 poster that visually summarized our findings and delivering a detailed presentation in an online meeting format showcasing our proposed solutions and insights.

This project highlighted the profound impact of gentrification on traditional streets, revealing how rapid modernization can strip away the cultural essence and historical significance of these areas, leaving behind a shadow of their former selves. I was struck by the realization that finding a balance between modern development and preserving traditional character is crucial for maintaining the integrity of these spaces. The need for a thoughtful compromise became clear as it is essential to honor both historical value and contemporary needs. I was very satisfied with what we were able to find on our research but regarding the site visit it was very hurried so I am eager to revisit this topic in the future with a more calm and collected mind to gain a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play.
